Albion in the Community still supporting local people

Albion in the Community may have had to postpone its sessions, but that isn’t stopping it offering support to many of the thousands of people it works with across Sussex.

The charity runs more than 60 different projects throughout the local area, supporting upwards of 40,000 people every year.

It recently took the tough decision to suspend all delivery to minimise the impact of Covid-19 on its participants, their families, the charity’s staff, and the wider community.

However, that hasn’t meant the often-vital support the charity provides has stopped.

Staff are regularly checking in with the most-vulnerable people the charity helps, with teams also currently working to adapt workshops and sessions to be suitable for online delivery.

The charity is in the process of producing some Albion-themed worksheets for pupils studying English and maths at home, with support also being offered to local schools.

Longer-term plans include live lessons, health and fitness sessions hosted on YouTube, fun and healthy easy-to-prepare recipes for families to follow at home, and courses and qualifications people can complete online.

Matt Dorn, chief executive officer at Albion in the Community, said the charity’s focus over the coming weeks would be on helping people get active, stay well, and continue to learn.

He said, “As a charity we are determined to continue to support the people we work with, many of whom are particularly vulnerable and are now having to self-isolate as part of the government’s shielding process.

“Our staff are doing their best to come up with new ways to provide support to those people, our other participants, and the wider local community.

“At times like this it is more important than ever that we support the most-vulnerable people in society and as charity we will continue to do so in any way we can.”
