Schools invited to take part in Premier League programme

Albion in the Community (AITC) is looking for local secondary schools to take part in a Premier League programme that uses the appeal of football and Brighton & Hove Albion FC to develop young people’s enterprise and life skills.

AITC has been piloting the Premier League Enterprise programme with six local secondary schools during the current academic year; it now plans to increase that number and work with a minimum 10 schools and 20 cohorts of students next year.

Premier League Enterprise is jointly-funded by the Premier League and Sport Relief and looks to increase young people’s aspirations and skills.

Over the course of a term, students get the opportunity to see how Brighton & Hove Albion FC is run, learn some valuable lessons about business and get to understand more about the work that goes on behind the scenes to help win football matches.

AITC wants to hear from local secondary schools interested in signing-up for the next academic year.

Any Sussex-based secondary school can express an interest in taking part, with AITC particularly interested in working with those schools and young people most in need.

Schools have until 5pm this Friday to express an interest and the charity will then select schools based on need and on their completed applications.

Paul Williams, schools manager at AITC, believes schools can use the programme to help inspire young people to engage positively with their education.

He said: “We have already seen the impact of this innovative programme on countless young people from schools across Sussex. While the context of the programme is football and Brighton & Hove Albion FC, the programme will help develop the essential skills – such as communication, resilience and teamwork – that are vital for all young people to be successful.”

Schools will also have the opportunity to participate in the Premier League Enterprise Challenge, with local secondary students set a football business challenge by the Premier League’s executive chairman. Earlier this season a team of pupils from Varndean School made it all the way to the national final.
