Albion in the Community (AITC) is supporting World Down Syndrome Day today (21 March).

AITC is now one of the largest providers of football opportunities for people with a disability in the area and runs around 25 regular sessions across Sussex.

The charity is now looking to establish a regular session for people with Down’s syndrome and recently held a football taster event at the American Express Elite Football Performance Centre.

More than 25 players attended and AITC has a number of similar events planned for later in the year.

AITC also runs a number of pan-disability football sessions at venues throughout Sussex, including clubs in Brighton, Eastbourne, Worthing, Chichester, Burgess Hill and Horsham. These sessions are suitable for anyone who has a disability and AITC runs separate sessions at each venue for junior and adult players.

Ten of AITC’s adult players with Down’s syndrome from within the pan-disability sessions are visiting Charlton Athletic to play a friendly on the pitch before Charlton’s home game with Southend United, while AITC also has a number of teams that compete in the Sussex Disability Football League.

Phil Broom, AITC’s disability development clubs officer, said: “At AITC we firmly believe that everyone should have the opportunity to play football and it was great to see so many people at our recent taster session enjoying playing football and learning new skills.”
