The winner of the inaugural Albion in the Community Award has been revealed as Callum Ronald, a student on the charity’s BTEC programme.

Callum was presented with the award at last night’s Brighton & Hove Albion Players’ Awards Dinner at the American Express Community Stadium.

He was one of 11 people short-listed by staff at Albion in the Community (AITC) and received the most votes following an online poll of supporters.

Callum, who was presented with the award by AITC ambassadors Liam Rosenior and David Stockdale, travels to and from the stadium every day for lessons as part of his BTEC course with AITC and despite that involving a near four-hour round trip every day, has not missed a day of college in two years.

He is on target to achieve the highest grade possible on the course and has also volunteered at a range of events with the charity’s fundraising department.

Sarah McAdam, AITC’s BTEC manager, was full of praise for Callum, who attended last night’s awards ceremony with his parents. She said: “Callum has thrived in our alternative education environment. He has worked hard to improve his knowledge, understanding and application in both futsal and 11-a-side football and is now a regular feature in teams across both formats. He is a worthy winner.”

Callum Budd, who plays for AITC’s cerebral palsy team, and Keith and Darren Gallis and Seagull Travel, who are big supporters of the charity’s work, narrowly missed out on winning the award and made up the top three. AITC received more than 1,000 votes.

Elsewhere at last night’s Brighton & Hove Albion Players’ Awards Dinner, Danny Hemsley from AITC’s amputee football team was presented with the Sarah Watts Inspiration Award. The Albion fan, who lost his leg during an accident while helping a friend move furniture, has become a key player for Brighton & Hove Albion Amputee FC and earlier this season was selected for a Great Britain training squad.

The audience at the Players’ Awards Dinner were shown videos featuring both winners.
