AITC’s European cycle challenge takes place this weekend
Albion in the Community’s (AITC) fifth European cycle challenge takes place this weekend, with cyclists raising money to help fund AITC’s football sessions for people with a disability.
A total of 33 cyclists are taking part in the two-day ride between Brussels in Belgium and the German city of Cologne, with the group leaving the American Express Community Stadium by coach this afternoon before an early start in Belgium tomorrow.
Among the riders are a number of Brighton & Hove Albion fans, including Gary Hollands, who is raising money in memory of his good friend and fellow Albion fan Terry Tribe, who passed away in February.
A passionate Albion fan, described by Gary as “a Brighton & Hove Albion encyclopedia”, Terry was also a keen supporter of AITC.
Gary is now cycling the 140-plus miles between Brussels and Cologne in tribute to his friend.
He explained, “Terry had a big personality and was such a wonderful man who’d do anything for anybody.
“He was diagnosed with cancer in 2017 out of the blue – it was a big shock and he was only given a couple of months to live.
“He didn’t think he would make Albion’s first game in the Premier League, but he did and managed most games up until Watford at the Amex in December, before his health got worse.
“Bruno came and visited him a few weeks before he passed away and more than 400 people attended Terry’s funeral.
“If you met Terry you certainly never forgot him. He had a massive personality and warmed the hearts of anyone he met. He was devoted to his family, and was a Brighton & Hove Albion supporter all his life.
“Albion in the Community is a charity Terry held close to his heart. He donated and raised hundreds of pounds over the years for the charity and he also represented Brighton at walking football.
“He will be missed immensely by family friends and everyone who knew him.”
